(1660-1662)
The State Papers relating to Ireland (preserved in the Public Record Office in England) from the restoration of the monarchy in June 1660 to December 1662 were calendared by R. P. Mahaffy and published in 1905. Most of the volume contains abstracts of correspondence with the Lord Lieutenant and other officials: but the first 150 pages consists of petitions made, upon the restoration, for lands, offices, &c. that had been lost during the Commonwealth period. There is also an abstract of the contents (pages 648 to 660) of a thin manuscript book among the papers, containing petitions and papers relating to the estate of the Marquis of Antrim, which had been divided up among English and Irish Protestant soldiers and 'adventurers' and was now again in contention.VAN SOMEREN. The Indian Army and Civil Service List for July 1861 was printed by order of the Secretary of State for India in Council. Dating from after the reform of British rule in India in 1858, the one volume brings together lists of British military officers and civil officials. The regimental lists for the army in the three presidencies (Bengal, Madras and Bombay) are arranged as in any Army List of the period, giving officers by rank, with date of rank in the regiment and the army, and remarks. The native regiments had been reorganised and reduced from 174,237 of all ranks on 1 January 1859 to about 110,400 men in 1861. The matriculation list of the University of London published in January 1870 shows all the students entering the university 1865 to 1869, but who had not yet taken an examination. Joseph Foster's Hand-List of Men-at-the-Bar gives a paragraph biography of men who had been called to the bar and were alive in 1885. After the full name (surname first, in capitals) there is a short statement of occupation or practice; a student at which inn of court; when called to the bar; father's name and then address; when born; if married, and, if so, wife's name (and her father's name) is often given.
